Norman Cherner Iconic Mid-Century Modern "Pretzel" armchair for Plycraft Co., designed in 1958

Norman Cherner Iconic Mid-Century Modern "Pretzel" armchair for Plycraft Co., circa 1950s. Excellent early example of this chair given the rich wood patina and provenance of this chair. Structurally sound with no signs of delamination or weakness. Originally designed to make modern design accessible to the masses, this incredible design features walnut-faced molded plywood and laminated birch bentwood made to create the illusion of a pretzel while providing comfort and style. Its sleek design is ideal for creating an organic aesthetic with sculptural curves and a handsome profile. Norman Cherner studied and taught at Columbia University and was also an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in NY. Norman Cherner is best known for his chair designs, but he was also very influential in pre-fabricated housing and his range of design also extends to glassware, lighting and graphic design. Norman Cherner is also the author of several design books. Son, Benjamin Cherner is a practicing architect as well as furniture designer. He studied architecture at Arizona State University and Columbia University.
